The Bristol Pitbulls ice hockey team have snapped up their second signing ahead of their debut season in the English National League.

Speedy forward Marc Roy Smith has put pen to paper on a deal to play for the Pitbulls, whose campaign kicks off in September.

The 23-year-old, 5ft 7ins skater turned professional at the tender age of 14, playing for the Telford Timberwolves in the English Premier Ice Hockey League. He has captained every age group he has played in and already enjoyed a career almost as long as that of his new boss.

Bristol Pitbulls coach Rich Hargreaves said: "Marc is someone I've been chasing for a while. He has a rich hockey background and, just like Mike Hargreaves, he'll be a strong leader in the changing room and lead by example on the ice.

"He might not be the biggest of players but what he lacks in height he makes up in other departments. He's a gritty, speedy player who will get under the skin of other teams. Marc will surprise many people this year."

Roy Smith, who was born in Swindon and lives in Montpelier, said: "I look forward to joining the Pitbulls, playing a good standard of hockey and pushing myself.

"Hopefully the team will fit into the league well and we will become one of the stronger competitors."

More signings are set to follow as Hargreaves shapes his side for a promotion push.

"I'm building a team which will compete hard each and every night, win, lose or draw," said the 30-year-old Bristolian.

"I want opposing teams to know they're in for a battle when they visit Bristol.

"It's going to be a hard, long nine months come September but, like many other sports, it has its ultimate goal, league honours and promotion."
