BRISTOL ROVERS will have to wait for one more week before learning whether the final barrier to the club building a new stadium has been removed.

As reported in The Post the club is planning to push ahead with plans for a new stadium after Sainsbury's was granted permission to build a supermarket at the club's current ground.

The only thing that could still stop or delay the scheme would be if it was "called in" by the Eric Pickles – the minister for Communities and Local Government.

Bristol Rovers were expecting to hear last Friday on whether the planning application will get the go-ahead from Mr Pickles but the decision has now been put back until February 26. Despite the delay the club is still confident that the scheme will be backed by Mr Pickles.

Nick Higgs, chairman of the club, said: "I was disappointed to hear from Sainsbury's representatives that the Secretary of State has extended the timetable for his review to February 26 due to the timing of the last receipt of information. Although this is frustrating I do believe that this is only a procedural issue."

Bristol City Council has voted to allow the redevelopment of the Memorial Stadium in Horfield which in turn paves the way for the club to build a new £40 million stadium at Stoke Gifford.

Work is expected to start on the new home for the club in the summer and the new stadium will be ready in time for the 2015/16 season.

The new 21,700-seat stadium, which will be built on land owned by the University of the West of England, was given planning permission last year by South Gloucestershire councillors.

The club needs the money from the sale of the current ground to the supermarket chain in order to help fund the cost of the new stadium.

Tricia Thorpe, from Traders And Residents Against Sainsbury's Horfield (Trash), have said the new store would lead to shop closures, unemployment, loss of consumer choice and "the devastation of a high street that is known across the country for its charm and variety of independent shops".

“The UWE Stadium plans could fall through tomorrow and Stephen Lansdown would still be moving Bristol RFC to Ashton regardless because, a) it makes sense financially for his sporting project and b) The Mem is no longer fit for purpose as a professional sports stadium.

As the proposed plans satisfied the Royal British Legion, I'm sure they will the secretary of state too.”

“According to Google Maps (walking distance from Home Leas Close which is next to the proposed new stadium).
Beaufort Arms - 1.5 miles or 32 mins
Bull Dog - 1.5 miles or 30 mins
Fox Den - 1.0 Miles or 19 mins
King George - 1.1 miles or 22 mins

    All nice and 'local' then.

Mem to The Wellington - 0.3Miles or 6 minutes.”

“Fatboy - I'm NOT talking about match day traffic. This monster supermarket will cause traffic chaos in the area 364 days of the year. Did you read the councils traffic report? This will affect everyone in north Bristol inc bus travellers, pedestrians and cyclists as they will also have to breath in the fumes from stationary traffic. So I repeat when you are driving into Bristol from where you live (which must be near Stoke Gifford) and you hit slow traffic when you get to roads that link to the old Mem site (so A38, Filton Ave, Station Road, Muller Road) then please don't complain.

Also you enjoy your beer in the pubs you mentioned - I know them all and wouldn't choose to booze in any of them. The Bulldog is bloody miles away and you are liable to get a smack in the gob for your trouble, the King G not a lot nearer too, Fox Den is pants and Beaufort Arms is a fake modern foody pub. I'll stick to the Welly.

I've no problem with the Mem being redeveloped but I did have a problem with 500 student flats and no parking for them.”

“I can name at least 4 pubs all within walking distance of the proposed new ground King George Filton ave The Fox Den by the holiday Inn Parkway Tavern and The beufort arms go a little further and you get the The Bulldog also on Filton Ave all close to the new ground.. So thats that argument blown out of the water. Traffic will only be an issue on match days before and after kick off and with direct access on to the ring road and M32 also with Filton Abbey Wood and Bristol Parkway within touching distance once again no major issue. Living where I do I can walk to the ground. The residents of Horefield didnt want the Memorial stadium improved yet they dont want a Sainsburys either . So what do they want.?”

“Bad news for anyone who lives and works in North Bristol. A38 \ Muller \ Filton will be badly affected so if you supported this scheme and find yourself sat in a traffic jam in North Bristol in future please don't complain. The local economy will be affected as the roads are already at capacity.

Bad news for Rover's fans. You'll be sat in a 3/4 empty stadium. Yes it will be new but it will also be completely soulless. No local pubs and you'll have to drive to UWE anyway.

Bad news for Bristol Rugby fans - they have lost their spiritual home as they now have to go over to Ashton Gate.

Shameful for everyone - the ground was gifted to the people of Bristol for sporting purposes in memory of the Rugby players who died in the war. Oh let's forget that and build a bloody great supermarket on this instead. Money talks - absolutely shameful. No respect but money talks.

Give it a few years and they will be selling off Arnos Vale to Tescos.”

“horfield Boy has a point -

I do love Bristol and despite my old username do actually live close again, but it's a total fallacy to say the Gloucester Rd is known nationally! It's hardly known locally, let alone nationally. I've lived in Bath, Corsham and Colerne and never found a soul who even visited Bristol regularly, let alone knew about a long and straggly road with some shops on it.

"Road has shops on it" - shock horror exclusive!!!!!”

“I completely disagree with Tricia, she appears narrow minded, unable or unwilling to see the bigger picture, the truth.

The Gloucester Road will live long and prosper once the Sainsbury is up and running.

The new Sainsbury will be welcomed by many locals and the domino effect for the Rovers and UWE will be superb not only for them but Bristol.

I am confident Mr Pickles will see what a great opportunity this is for Horfield, the UWE,Rovers and Bristol.”

“"the devastation of a high street that is known across the country for its charm and variety of independent shops". What a load of cobblers!

Alternatively Gloucester Road is barely known outside of Horfield apart from people who drive through it to get to work and consists mainly of bars, coffe shops, charity shops and a few specialist shops - none of which will be affected by Sainsburys being in Filton Avenue.

I expect Tricia wa also a member of RAGE when the new stadium at The Mem plans were bging disputed.

I'm sure Eric Pickles won't be swayed by the objections.

Of course, Rovers could just go ahead and build the new Memorial Stadium with the student flats if that is what the residents prefer. And as my user name implies, I am one of the residents!”
