Rock star's son Otis Ferry was behind bars last night after appearing in court to face charges of perverting the course of justice.

Countryside campaigner Ferry, 25, son of Roxy Music singer Bryan Ferry, allegedly approached a witness involved in his trial for the alleged robbery of a hunt monitor and assault of another near Cheltenham.

The prosecution claims that Ferry contacted his former groomsman and potential witness David Hodgkiss by telephone on September 8 and asked him not to provide information to police.

It also alleges that between September 7 and September 17, through a series of acts Ferry again contacted Mr Hodgkiss and threatened to "discredit him as a disgruntled employee".

Ferry did not enter a plea to either charge of perverting the course of justice.

The bench at Cheltenham Magistrates' Court initially granted Ferry bail.

However, Peter Ashby, prosecuting, immediately lodged an appeal against the decision on the grounds that Ferry faced two charges of perverting the course of justice.

"This case concerns perverting the course of justice which in the vernacular many people would call witness nobbling," Mr Ashby said.

Ferry must remain in custody until the appeal application is heard today at Gloucester Crown Court, sitting at Cirencester Magistrates' Court.

Ferry was arrested by police on Wednesday and held overnight after his robbery and assault trial at Gloucester Crown Court was adjourned to a date to be fixed.

Ferry, of Easton Mascot in Shropshire, was to be tried for allegedly grabbing a camera from a hunt monitor last year as she filmed him at his sport.

He denies all charges.

The incident is alleged to have taken place while Ferry was with the Heythrop Hunt, which covers Oxfordshire and Gloucestershire.

Dressed in the same clothes as he wore in court on Wednesday, Ferry looked tired and pale.

His counsel, Philip Lucas, said his client denied all wrongdoing in relation to the new allegations.

Mr Lucas said Mr Hodgkiss was an unreliable witness and had a criminal record, with a total of 11 crimes of dishonesty to his name.

Ferry was due in court today at 10am to ask for bail.

He will then appear at Gloucester Crown Court on October 1 in relation to the charges of perverting the course of justice.

Ferry's trail for alleged assault and robbery was dramatically halted by the trail judge on Wednesday and adjourned to a date to be fixed.

Judge Martin Picton refused to say why he was adjourning the trial.

It is not the first time that Ferry has courted controversy. In February this year he was cleared of criminal damage after allegedly snatching the car keys of two paparazzi that were pursuing actress Sienna Miller.

“I should have told you Ken. . Each time I manage to provoke a negative response such as yours my broker has to pay me £5; but each time I get a supportive one from the mainly silent majority I have to pay him £15. . He insists on this differential because he says the negative prey is always so voracious and can never resist taking the bait. . 'Come back' soon and tell me where Avon is. . My postman is dying to know. . Maybe you are a fish?! . But hey!! That's a subject for another day! . Best Charles”

“Not sad at all Rob. . I'm enjoying a nice glass of 1999 Chateau La Tourette. . A paullilac with exquisite balance, fine character and extraordinary length. . The perfect antidote to the past couple of quite stressful days, and no better way to celebrate my magnificent gains on today's record bounce. . Be sure to let me know when you find out where Avon is. . . . Best Charles. . . I must say this is a change from goading slugs. .”

“I agree with you Rob plus poor old Charles Henry is a very sad man...even his wife couldnt cope with him. I bet this is about as much socialising as he does. He doesnt mind animals being tortured but he wouldnt do it himself so that appears to be his get out. Maybe if he was being chased by a pack of wolves he wouldnt be so happy to let 'nature be nature'. As I said he is a very sad man and not worth a response.”
