Robinson returns to sink his old club
BATH legend Andy Robinson's Edinburgh deservedly brought Bath's unbeaten pre-season to an end at the Recreation Ground last night.
The home side, who had secured wins over Ulster and Llanelli Scarletts, led 8-3 but too many errors and far too many penalties given away at the break down were their downfall before the Scots added second half tries through Simon Webster and Andrew Turnbull.
Head coach Steve Meehan handed England front row forwards Lee Mears and Matt Stevens and former Bradford Bulls rugby league centre Shontayne Hape their maiden first team starts of pre-season.
But Bath took their time to settle yet opened the scoring with their first real attack on 11 minutes.
Hape – if early glances are anything to go by could be natural at union – glided around the Edinburgh defence before releasing winger Joe Maddock.
Former Gloucester fly-half Chris Paterson, back in his more familiar role of full-back, halted the Bath flier but couldn't prevent the offload to Nick Abendanon, who timed his run to perfection to score.
Berne missed the conversion but added an 18th minute penalty and, at this stage, the Scots were struggling to live with their hosts.
But Bath lost No 8 Jonny Faamatuainu, who had previously been warned for a similar incident, for interfering in the line-out on 26 minutes and two minutes later, and two minutes later Paterson landed his first penalty.
The hosts were unlucky not to add a second try on 32 minutes as wing Andrew Higgins hacked on twice after Paterson fumbled.
But after his second kick ahead the ball squirted to the too far to left, allowing Edinburgh wing Mark Robertson to cover and concede a five metre scrum.
The chance was lost when two phases later, Bath, not for the first time, were penalised for infringing at the ruck.
And Edinburgh finished the stronger in the half, Paterson adding two further penalties to take a 9-8 lead at the break.
The visitors extended their advantage six minutes into the second half when scrum-half Michael Claassens, under pressure from Craig Hamilton, gave away possession. Replacement David Callam was first to react and passed for the quicker Webster to score.
On 53 minutes, Edinburgh crossed for the second time after a terrific break and superb pass from Scotland No 9 Mike Blair, No 8 Allister Hogg was in support before wing Andrew Turnbull dived over.
The game was delayed for five minutes on the hour when replacement David Blair was knocked out after colliding with Hape's shoulder.
Bath skipper Michael Lipman, who had tackled Blair around the legs, was also injured in the incident and went straight to dressing room with an icepack on the back of his neck.
The home side sent on last season's top try scrorer Matt Banahan with five minutes left, much to the 3,300 crowd's delight, but even his presence on the left wing couldn't prevent the defeat.
Bath: N Abendanon (J Cuthbert 65); J Maddock, S Hape, E Fuimaono-Sapolu, A Higgins (M Banahan 75); J Berne (T Cheeseman 65), M Claassens (S Bemand 72); D Barnes (D Flatman 58), L Mears (P Dixon 58), M Stevens (D Bell 58), J Harrison, P Short, S Hooper, M Lipman (capt, Scaysbrook 65), J Faamatuainu (J Ovens 78).

“Bath - Edinburgh report omitted the final score!!! May be reported elsewhere but is it too much to ask instead of 'couldn't prevent the defeat' to have added '....defeat by 19 points to 8' or whatever?”
