Swindon Town striker Simon Cox plundered another wonder goal to help Danny Wilson secure the first win of his tenure and then set his sights on climbing into the top half of League One.

Cox scored a sublime volley that manager Wilson described as 'like the ilk of Bergkamp' sandwiched between goals from Kevin Amankwaah and Billy Paynter to help his side claim only a second win in the last 14 games with victory over Walsall last night.

And now Cox is targeting a 15-point haul in a fixture-filled February to lift his side out into the top-half of League One after Wilson enjoyed his first Swindon win at the fourth attempt.

Cox said: "We've had six weeks together now and we are looking more like the side he wants us to be. To win the game and score three goals is positive for us and we go to Oldham (on Saturday) with our heads held high and our chests puffed out.

"If we can go on a run now we will climb up the table rapidly. Games will come thick and fast and we have to be looking at picking up 15 to 18 points in February. We are looking up after this win.

"I don't think we should be in this position around the bottom of the table with the players we have and we need to be aiming for the top-half. I think that is achievable."

Cox said his goal at Scunthorpe was better than his effort last night, but manager Wilson praised the strike.

"It had the look of a Bergkamp goal about it," Wilson said. "It was a great pass from Lilian, but to pull it out of the sky and score a volley without the ball touching the ground in two touches was fantastic. There are not many players who could do things like that.

"That's why people (other clubs) are looking at him and long may they keep looking."

Town did concede two late goals to set up a nervy finish and Wilson added: "We had total command of the game and we made life hard for ourselves. We should have shut the game out and it was quite nervy.

"We won't get carried away, but we can take confidence from the win. We have shown what we can do and the lads deserve a big pat on the back for the way they performed."

Loan signings Gordon Greer and Hal Robson-Kanu made impressive debuts and left-back Jamie Vincent made a long awaited return.

Jack Smith (illness) and Lee Peacock (back) missed out as well as fully-fit midfielder Craig Easton. Wilson added: "We have to keep changing the side until we find the winning formula."
