Among many impressive performances from Avon's teenagers at the South West Sportshall Championships, Callum Court's was arguably the most outstanding.

The event officials certainly thought so as he was awarded the prize as the best all-rounder in the Under-15 boys' age group after winning the two-lap race and the standing long jump, helping the Avon squad to win the relay event and also finishing third in the shot putt.

"I was very pleased with that," said Court, a 15-year-old student at Fairfield School.

"I wasn't expecting to win the overall award so it was a brilliant surprise.

"It was also a fantastic day for Avon and it was the best competition I have been in in terms of results. I really enjoyed it."

Court, who lives in Eastville, only took up athletics last summer after encouragement from teachers at his school.

He decided to link up with Yate & District Athletic Club and quickly came under the guidance of coach Kevin Barry.

"Callum is a very good young athlete," said Barry. "He has been with me since the start of last summer, when he showed an interest in the triple jump.

"He is strong and fast and, while his technique is a bit ragged, that is something we can work on and he has definitely made a lot of progress already. He has got the potential to do well if he keeps working hard at the event."

Success like last weekend's will only fuel Court's desire, although at present athletics has to fit in with all his other sporting commitments.

"I do a bit of everything – football, rugby and cricket," added Court. "I just enjoy all sports."

Ultra specialist Ron Shannon, of Bitton Road Runners, competed in the Tring2town 80-mile race along the Grand Union canal from Brentford to Tring, then back the next day.

He covered Saturday's 40 miles in a time of 5:37.00 and the following day returned in 5:58.0.
