Rising local tennis star Swan sees off oppo in Bournemouth
Bristol junior tennis player Katie Swan capped a tremendous couple of days at the AEGON Junior National Championships Under-10 invitational tournament after she was crowned champion of the prestigious event at the weekend.
Katie, from Abbots Leigh was the top seed and one of the country's most promising young talents, progressed throughout the draw without dropping a set to make Saturday's final where she came up against Scottish player Anastasia Mikheeva.
The girls, who were playing short sets in the tournament, stunned an intrigued crowd with some excellent baseline rallies and some fantastic volleys, but it was Katie's consistency and sheer determination that won her the first set 5-3.
The second set was an equally close affair, but with Katie able to use her experience to win the big points to enable her to eventually wrap up the match 5-3, 4-2.
After the event at The West Hants club in Bournemouth, Katie a pupil at The Downs School, Wraxall said: "I'm really pleased. I never gave up and I tried my hardest all the time.
"I've been playing quite a few tournaments during the holidays and I've done really well in them.
"I even won a tournament in Croatia and I just like winning. I go back to school next week so I'm looking forward to seeing my friends but I also want to go back to my training so I can get better and hopefully win lots more tournaments."
In June, Katie won the Smirkva Bowl, the most important tennis tournament on the European calendar for Under-10s.
More than 100 boys and girls from across the world competed, with Katie beating Serbian Jovana Vukovic 6-4 6-2 in the final, adding the Smirkva Bowl title to the national 10-and-under clay court title she recently won.
