MATT Ridgeway, from Keynsham, was a clear winner of the North Somerset Club's Terry Phillips Timed and Observation Trial at Compton Dando on Sunday.

He was first to complete 12 laps of a challenging circuit at Fairy Hill, and he also retained a clean sheet on observation.

Runner-up Andy Frost and Adrian Dark did not incur penalties in either of the half-dozen sections, but both were slower than Ridgeway.

Mark Hamblin and his brother, Jason, took the top two places in the trials class. Neither lost marks in the sections and they were separated by the time factor.

After a long lay off, Simon Prideaux proved that he could match Hamblin's pace, but he dropped nine marks on observation in the last two sections.

Bristol's Lee Hassall retained a clean sheet in winning the Wilts Border Club's Kington Cup Trial at Stanton St Quinton, near Chippenham, the same day.

Staged over four laps of ten sections at Smith's Farm, the event attracted more than 50 starters.

Runner-up Oliver Humphries, who was also the best youth competitor, lost only a single mark on a cambered turn over mud and roots in the fourth section. The same section claimed three marks from clubman expert class winner Gareth Talbot.

Keelan Hancock, from Bodmin, got off to a good start in the new Cornwall Centre Trials Championship over the weekend. He won the Camel Vale club's Kernow Trophy event at St Blazey on Saturday by 20 marks from Jason Lawer, and he won the Camborne-Redruth club's Trispen Cup meeting, near Redruth, the following day by 12 marks, with Lawer again finishing in second place.

In Devon, Rob Pollard won the Moretonhampstead club's Leighton Steer Cup Trial at Lettaford, near North Bovey, by three marks from Tom Bushin. The outcome hinged on a climb over rocks in the final section.

The Motorcycle Club of Great Britain's 83rd Exeter Trial began from three starting points at Plusha, near Launceston in Cornwall, Cirencester in Gloucestershire and Popham Airfield, near Basingstoke in Hampshire, on Friday evening. At midnight, they all converged at the Haynes International Motor Museum at Sparkford, near Yeovil, for a supper stop prior to tackling 14 hills in the dark, but in much milder conditions than in previous years, in Somerset and East Devon before arriving at Exeter Services on the M5 for a welcome breakfast stop.

With man and machine refuelled, the field faced another 14 hills before the finish at the Trecarn Hotel at Babbacombe, near Torquay, at lunchtime on Saturday, including Woostons Steep, which ruined many's hopes of attaining a first class award.

For many who had travelled to the event from as far afield as Newcastle-upon-Tyne, Cumbria, West Wales and Kent, the weekend was only half completed.
