Revenge is so sweet for Yate as Hughes doubles up
Gloucestershire County Youth: Yate Town avenged their recent Legue Cup semi-final defeat by winning 2-1 at Forest Green Rovers in a vital midweek match at the top end of the table.
Lewis Hughes, whose father Rob is the manager of the side, scored both goals to keep his team in the title hunt.
Sneaking up on Forest Green are Cheltenham Saracens, their opponents in the League Cup final at Cirencester Town on Sunday, April 5. Saracens beat visitors Longwell Green Sports 3-2 thanks to goals from Jamie Barnes, Sonnie Burrows and Stefan Hunt. Andy Gibbs hit both Longwell Green goals.
Bristol Manor Farm failed to score for the first time in 20 league and cup matches this season as they crashed 4-0 at home to Wotton Rovers.
On target for Wotton were Richard Thwaite, Tom Woods and Tom Stubbs (2).
The three weekend matches all resulted in comfortable wins. Cadbury Heath, who a fortnight earlier had beaten Gala Wilton away with almost the last kick of the match, won the return fixture 6-0 thanks to four goals from Billy Hodge, plus strikes from Josh Nelson and James Hubbard.
The victory lifted Heath to within two points of Yate Town at the top of the table and they have games two games in hand.
Forest Green rebounded from the midweek home defeat against Yate with a 3-0 away win at Thornbury Town. Leon Jones and Stuart Tardivo were among the goalscorers.
Shirehampton romped to 6-2 home win over Longwell Green, racing into a 3-0 half-time lead thanks to Kyle Buffery (2) and Luke Tanner.
Ben Morgan got a goal back for Longwell Green on the hour and, after Ben McKenna had made it 4-1, Andy Gibbs struck again for the visitors. Two goals in the last 10 minutes confirmed Shirehampton's victory. Joe Holt knocked the ball home to make it 5-2 and Buffery completed his hat-trick.
