Resort's a care home hot spot, survey claims
Weston-super-Mare has more nursing and residential homes than nearly anywhere else in the country.
The resort has one home for every 1,803 local residents – the 15th highest ratio in Britain, according to a survey.
Tony Martin, chairman of local information website, locallife.co.uk, said: "It may come as no surprise to some that Weston-super-Mare is a care home hotspot.
"One in four residents in North Somerset is aged 60 or over, well above the average for UK local authorities. This is a clear case of supply and demand. The UK's ageing population – combined with Weston-super-Mare's popularity as a retirement destination – means there's unlikely to be a slowdown in demand for care homes in the area any time soon.
"But, pressure on rooms in the town's nursing and residential homes is good news for the local jobs market in the long term."
Eastbourne finished top of the care home rankings, with a care home per 836 people. Bognor Regis and Hastings finished in third and fourth positions overall, with a home for every 1,096 and 1,195 residents respectively. Denbighshire completed the top five. Fourteen of the top 20 places for care homes per head of population are coastal areas. By contrast, Tower Hamlets has the shortest supply of care homes relative to population. Each care home in the London borough serves more than 20,000 residents. Seven London boroughs – Hackney, Hammersmith & Fulham, Camden, Greenwich, Westminster, Newham and Tower Hamlets – feature in the 10 worst places for care provision.
