A petition with nearly 150 signatures has been submitted to the city council protesting against new homes being built in Bristol.

Sovereign Housing Association wants to build 22 homes in the grounds of Roegate House, Speedwell, an 11-storey tower block which is occupied by about 90 older residents.

But residents in nearby Ponting Close are fighting the plan because they believe it will cause traffic congestion and affect wildlife in the area.

The petition says: "Too much green space is being developed without proper consultation with local residents regarding their opinions and with little consideration to health and security or to local wildlife, traffic congestion and infrastructure.

"Sovereign Housing and Bristol City Council appear to be colluding in the project with no consideration to the views of the local electorate."

The site, which lies between Speedwell Road and Whitefield Avenue, is owned by the city council.

The housing association wants to build 12 homes fronting onto Speedwell Road and one four-bed home fronting onto Whitefield Avenue.

They also want to build two terraces – one of four homes and another with five homes – where garages on the north of the site used to stand before they were demolished.

Councillors will decide at a council planning committee tomorrow whether to give consent to the scheme.

A report by planning officers says the site is suitable for housing development.

It says: "The scale of development and density is acceptable and meets the need to provide mixed and balanced communities and to make an efficient use of land.

"The site layout and design of properties are acceptable and respect the character of the area and amenities of surrounding residents."

The planning officers have no objections on highways grounds.
