A fire in the top floor of a block of flats caused dramatic scenes in Barton Hill.

The fire broke out at about 5pm on Sunday in the kitchen of a flat at Longlands House, off Cobden Street.

Dozens of worried residents filed out onto the grass verge to watch as smoke billowed out of the window.

Maria Adams, 35, lived on one of the lower floors. She said: "We were walking back when we saw the smoke and fire engines. It was quite worrying as we didn't know what had caused the fire or where it was."

Crews from Temple and Speedwell attended the fire and two firefighters tackled the flames.

The flat was empty at the time. The cause of the fire was an electrical fault.
