Residents express relief as bailiffs evict squatters from school building
SQUATTERS who occupied a former school of English for more than eight months have been evicted.
Police had received numerous calls from residents complaining of noise, abuse and late night partying at the property in Lower Park Row.

At 10am yesterday five bailiffs attended the property and between eight and 10 of the remaining squatters left peacefully – some using scarves to hide their identities. They packed their possessions into a white van and a yellow Citroen watched by three police officers, who also attended the scene.
One young squatter who was hiding his face told a resident: "Have a lovely summer – sorry if we were a bit noisy sometimes." When the resident replied: "A bit late now," he retorted: "Ok, sorry I'm homeless, have a good summer with all your money."
It is understood the property will now be converted into flats for foreign students who attend the school's venue in Denmark Street which is now called OISE Bristol.
After the property was cleared a security firm moved in to secure windows and the roof. They also installed an alarm system to protect the building against further breaches.
One resident, who did not wish to be named, said the squatters had been there since April last year. They added: "They'd been there for eight and a half months and were abusive to everybody. I remember once an old lady asked them to turn the music down in the day once and just got abuse. I'd seen them playing loud music, swearing and throwing bottles around. I must have rung the police on at least 20 occasions and environmental health have been up here as well.
"We went away on some weekends deliberately just so we can get a rest from it all – that's not right. When you confronted them they'd just say you were jealous because they don't have to pay rent. They were quite happy to use the bins but they don't pay council tax which pays for the services."
She added: "They had huge parties – especially in the summer when they would just pack into the garden. The last week's been an absolute nightmare. They've had drums in there and have been making a racket every night. I just hope they are gone for good and can't get back in again. The system just doesn't work at the moment. It's not geared up to protect the public."
Jon Crocker, principal of OISE Bristol, said: "We do understand there are housing issues in the city and clearly this is a problem that needs to be addressed. However, we have a responsibility towards our neighbours and our students, so we now wish to use the property to its full potential again."

“crumbs taken care of! Hats off to you guys i know you were all sweetie pies but the majority will never 'get' you and your kind as people love to tar with the same brush. Throw in some hard times and people resent your freedom from rent and taxes. Everyone else has their noses so well and truly stuck in that grind stone that they are only prepared to see the bad. I still reckon it was three parties too many though, considering you would of kept the entire neighbourhood up all night including those next door with small babies. No sleep = grumpy! If there were no parties (tough i know!) and no Dale Farm banner a'blowin in the breeze then i dont think hardly anyone would of even known you were there.”

“And yes I dealt with a swearing neighbour whilst gardening one time and it was horrible who actually had the firemen called out for no reason and ****ed them off as well and he was older than me and completely irrational so should stop behaving like a child. I know I never swore at anyone. Well all over with for now & no harm done to anyone, but the squatting community by this bias article. We were just moving out and frankly did not ask for this attention. Thank you.”

“Loll I do and am not always a messy eater and am glad some posts of mine have been removed, please allow me to clear up the mess on my face. These where just my opinions and I have not looked at this since article since the last time I posted several days ago. When my head was clearer I realised, the simple truth. Whether we where meant to be there or not; the fact is the place had been squatted three times; and we where a fresh crew who took over. My simple point is; the owner gave us his permission and blessing to stay in the building rent free for months as we looked after it, stopped it being wrecked or scrapped, stopped the druggies and alcoholics taking over simply by us being there (it cud have been other less considerate squatters u know) & did the garden up which the owner was pleased about. When he first met us he actually said "God; your really nice people. and provided a good shelter to people who used it to boost themselves too better things such as work as a chef in a ski resort in the French alps (not bad for an 18 year old) or travel abroad on once in a lifetime adventures. I did not like presenting my views in such a way and have been concerned about drawing negative attention to the squatting community. I could not afford rent, I have explained my actions and reasons; thus said arguments to the contrary are null and void in my onion. Who in their right mind would give up the opportunity to live in such a beautiful building? (For free???) We had easy contact with the head of the school & the judge even said in court, well if you want to stay till Xmas, why not stay past January so you can have a New Years Eve party. Like I said, I was expecting such oxy moronic responses as have seen he replies when my mates took the bank in Manchester and it was discussed in their article, but I saved my input as I had left squatting and did not want to be drawn into such a bun fight lolz you would probably expect at lot worse from normal students and a bit of a band practice every now and then s hardly a rave or a ska/punk/reggae/acoustic/roots dub night/ gig like i wanted in the garden :) x anyways, so the papers weren't even invited by our lot, so I don't know how they knew. So..... This article should be abbreviated to; people move out of house, neighbour said they were noisy sometimes. What has this to do with squatting & since the beginning the owners have always been contacted 9 months ago, via email saying, "Hi we are here but if you could let us know when you want to start work we will vacate". The place had been empty for years & sod all this going on about tax etc... I bet they all dodge it :) 1 Luv x (I'm looking at setting up a business and really like where I live now). (& allot about how buildings work) All in all we made a load of great friends and learnt allot (Such as how the building works and about its history.) And it's not often u can usually take things away from squats. What I actually said to the reporter was "We've all had a brilliant time, the owners happy we were here, the courts happy we are here, we have had a brilliant summer, & we actually want to be able to leave". Why didn't he print that??? As for abuse, that is slanderous, and not to point the finger as I never really spoke to the neighbour in question much/at all... and we asked the head of the school and council for permission and to warn them we were going to do it. (And you lot all act surprised some young people had a party :P ???) Anyway no harm was ever intended and it was appreciated having all this pressure put on us (i.e. direct calls too my phone from they're solicitor because people sat in the garden talking one night) which we accepted.”

“I dont think squatters can claim they are opting out of a bad system thus not paying taxes and rent and bills if they are happy to claim esa, incapacity benefit etc etc.
i know some say they were working but just say it like it is. u want free money and you dont want to contribute anything.
I am not saying that is every squatters way but that is the perception.
And trying to hide behind pseudo intellectual talk and a mask of social awareness, yes mask..
The world you live in is the world you live in...global capitalism has gone too far and controls everything, so if you cant beat the system...go with the flow”

“whatever you individual feelings about squatters are is irrelevant, they make their own choice and they are going to stick by it whatever, no point in making yourselves bad people for discriminating against them. But things like this article don't help. the basic standards of journalism ethics dictate that an article should be composed of truthfulness, accuracy, objectivity, impartiality, fairness and public accountability, and this article meets none of those criteria, and i will be emailing them to that effect.”
