Bristol massage parlour closes
Residents and shopkeepers in a street just yards from Old Market say they are "delighted" that the latest massage parlour to open in the street is being forced to close by Monday.
Locals were disgusted in April when the parlour Twice As Nice Massage reopened in West Street under a different name two doors down after being ask by Bristol City Council's planning team to close its original parlour.
They said the street which should be the "gateway to the city centre" was turning into "Porn Street" with a sex shop, an adult film shop and four massage parlours.
Local people signed a petition to get the original massage parlour closed down because it broke planning rules.
But just weeks later it reopened under a different name two doors away.
Twice As Nice Massage sits between a windsurfing shop, where parents and their young children shop, and a string of family-run hardware and computer businesses which have been there for up to 60 years.
Now, the council's planning department has given the owners until Monday to change the use of the parlour or enforcement action will be taken.
Councillor Brenda Hugill (Lab, Lawrence Hill) welcomed the move.
She said: "Old Market is the gateway to our city, it's an up and coming area, and this sends out the message that we will not let it turn into a mini Soho."
Barbara Cook, who owns TE Stone Ltd, near the parlour, said that the area was turning into "porn corner" and after hearing the good news yesterday, she said: "This is wonderful. Anything that the council does to stop this all happening is a great thing. I'm more than pleased."
Nick Smith is the owner of Windsurfers World, which is next door to the massage parlour ,and he said: "We are happy that the council has finally taken the decision to close down the massage parlour. This is tax-payers' money well spent."
Bristol City Council spokesperson Katharine de Lisle said: "Bristol City Council served an enforcement notice on the owners yesterday, with effect from June 1. They must cease operation as a massage parlour, as they do not have the specific planning permission needed for this use of the building."
Local residents alerted the council to a change of use of the property, he added.

“I wonder if Councillor Brenda Hugill ("we will not let it turn into a mini Soho") has ever been to Soho? It's one of the safest, friendliest places to be at any time of day or night.”

“"computer businesses which have been there for up to 60 years."
Huh? I would sure love to see the sort of computer they was selling in 1949.”
