Rescued in arctic blizzard conditions by rangers in the Yukon Challenge, Sophie Collett is already plotting her next ultra-distance challenge – in the Gobi desert.

The 24-year-old, from Clifton, and her fellow long-distance runners failed to make the finish line of the 430-miles Alaskan Challenge after the weather deteriorated to the extent that lives were in danger.

"We had reached 280 miles when we had to get rescued because the weather was so bad," said Collett.

"We had got completely snowed in and lost track of where we were going. The rangers told us it was the worst snow they had seen in 20 years and we literally just couldn't move, so they brought us out."

Collett said it was entirely the right decision and, while ultimately frustrated at not completing the course, she said it was an unforgettable experience.

"We were totally isolated out there because there were no people, animals, birds or noise, absolutely nothing at all," added Collett.

"It was the sort of place that could send you crazy and I must admit at times I started hallucinating and hearing things, especially at night.

"It was a very strange experience and, while it feels like unfinished business, I didn't enjoy it enough to do it again!

"I'm going for a hot race next time, so I have entered the Gobi Desert Challenge, which is held over 150 miles and will be completely different."
