Representative game starts the celebrations at Whitchurch
WHITCHURCH are marking their 90th anniversary with several celebration matches, a reunion of former players and a black-tie dinner.
The Norton Lane-based club start the festivities on Tuesday by welcoming a representative side from the Bristol & District Cricket Association (2pm), play host to the North Somerset League the following day and stage a President's XI verses Chairman's XI game on June 17. It's all a far cry from humble beginnings when a few friends gathered in the Black Lion pub and brought the club into existence.

President Ashton Broad is a man who has the club firmly in his heart. His grandfather, Walter Salmon, loaned ground in Staunton Lane for the club to use as its inaugural home from 1922 until 1963.
There was then a brief nomadic spell, before Whitchurch settled into its present home on the fringes of the village.

Broad said: "It's so gratifying to see how the club has grown from one team all those years ago to a key focal point in the village community today."
Whitchurch field four Saturday sides, one Sunday team and boast a flourishing youth set-up, to the delight of chairman Steve Leyshon.
He said: "I'm very proud of the way Whitchurch has blossomed into a family-orientated part of the community, having been part of the club for more than 30 years.
"It's a remarkable achievement for us to be celebrating 90 years and we're in a very strong position as we look forward to another 90 years."
The reunion of former players will take place on July 7.
Anyone interested in attending should contact Ashton Broad by email at ashtonbroad@tiscali.co.uk or call 01275 832148, while a black-tie dinner and awards night is on September 21.
