EMERGENCY repairs are being carried out to a road in Portishead which has been badly damaged by the heavy rain.

The road surface at Beach Hill was badly damaged after a torrent of water washed down from West Hill.

Flooding was caused after a pipe became blocked, causing water to flood into the street and lift the drain covers.

The road has now been closed while the repairs, costing £25,000 are carried out.

The closure has caused some difficulties for residents and allotment holders who access the site from Beach Hill.

North Somerset Council spokesman Nick Yates said: "The road surface was damaged due to a blocked pipe.

"We have carried out a drainage survey, replaced the pipe, repaired the road and brought forward some resurfacing work which we were due to carry out later this year, meaning we won't have to close the road again."

“A torrent of water? Did the houses at the bottom of the road get flooded? Or did the "torrent" suddenly turn left or right?”

“Good to see North Somerset Council getting their priorities right. There are road surfaces that have needed repair for years in Portishead but Beach hill gets £25,000 thrown at it? I assume it's coincidence that North Somerset Councillor David Pasley lives in Beach Hill? And before this comment gets removed after said councillor complains to the moderator, there is nothing defamatory or insulting in its content just a simple statement of fact and a doubt over who councillors are actually representi8ng, the wider populace or themselves (oops, that should do it).”
