Remembering when Topol raised the roof
RE memorable shows at the Bristol Hippodrome:
I took my niece, Susan, on her 12th birthday to see The King & I before it went to the West End in around 1950. It was a beautiful show and as it was Susan's first big musical it made her day.
Next outstanding show for my husband and I was Fiddler on the Roof in the 1960s or 70s? We loved the music, still do, and I can see Topol in my mind's eye. His voice and presence dominated the stage plus his 'naughty smile'.
We wanted to see him the following week but unfortunately he had left the show to return to Israel for disturbances there.

A show put on by staff of Fry's Chocolate Factory in Keynsham, Yesterday's Island – albeit an amateur show – played to packed houses and folk on buses and in shops spoke about it: "Have you seen he show?" I still have the tape we bought on leaving the Hippodrome. I wonder what happened to the principle tenor Steve Long? We were hoarse when we left the show, everyone singing their hearts out – what a night.
I had a newspaper cutting sent to me in July re the Hippodrome's 100th so as I am 92 years old on Saturday I decided to write.
