IT is really sad that in the 21st Century blood cancers like leukaemia, aplastic anaemia and immune deficiencies still kill thousands of people every year.

If more young people between the ages of 18-40 join the bone marrow registers available in this country now, more people's lives could be saved from these terrible illnesses.

One of the leading organisations that is used in the fight against these terrible diseases is the charity Anthony Nolan.

At this moment in time, we have more than 450,000 people on our register but we want to increase that amount up to one million by December 31, 2014.

If we do that, instead of helping to save one person out of four, which we do at present, we then will be able to save three out of four people.

It really is very easy to join our register.

All you have to do to join the Anthony Nolan bone marrow register is go online to our website and fill in a medical questionnaire and send it to us and follow the instructions on there.

You can be on our register for many, many years and never be called. If you are called, many people believe that taking stem cells or bone marrow from your body to give to someone else is very painful. It is absolutely not, as everything is done under a general anaesthetic.
