GARY Brimble admits that he is still on a learning curve in only his second season as a referee in the Bristol & Suburban League, following a long playing career.

"I still do not know all the rules though I have been in the game for over 26 years," said the former goalkeeper.

He kicked off between the posts for Manor Farm BC, then had a long spell with Southmead Athletic before ankle problems forced him to retire while at Easton-in-Gordano.

"I had difficulty in taking goal kicks so decided it was time to give up and refereeing meant that I could stay in touch with local football.

"I am really enjoying it more than I thought I would, but I do not intend to rush into it and get out of my depth."

He joined the Suburban League list last year and has gained experience as an assistant in the Gloucestershire County League.

"You can learn a lot from the line and I have improved my knowledge watching top referees, who also gave me good advice."

Having qualified with Pete Allen at Filton Academy, he retained contact with students and helps out with Bristol Central in the Avon Youth League on Sunday afternoons.

Gary feels that players not knowing the rules of the game is the biggest cause of dissent and he is hoping to make his own contribution on improving the position.

He has become involved with Bradley Stoke junior teams encouraging youngsters to increase their knowledge of the rules so they can understand decisions made by officials.

Gary has already been appointed to matches in the higher division of the Suburban League by Alan Evans and he is hoping to progress even further with experience.

He realises that he can make mistakes during these early days of officiating and would like to see players "having a bit of tolerance" rather than disputing every decision.
