Home player Laurie Canter continued his great form this year with an impressive record win in the 36-hole Saltford Salver.

He shared the first-round lead with club colleague Louis Boston on 68, two better than former Walker Cup star Mat Stanford (Saltford) and Matt Kippen (Enmore Park) on 70.

Stanford carded a two-under-par 69 in the afternoon but Kippen moved ahead with 68 for a two-round total of 138.

However, Canter destroyed the field with a five-under-par 66 containing an eagle and six birdies, and his eight-under total of 134 was a record.

Canter, the winner of the Midlands Youths championship last month and now playing off plus three, is hoping to claim a place in an England squad next year.
