Real Democracy protesters in Bristol call for end to European austerity
AROUND 40 people have held a protest against austerity in Europe in the city centre to coincide with strikes across the continent.
Greek and Spanish nationals joined the event - organised by anti cuts umbrella group Real Democracy - warning that the effects of the debt crises in the worst hit countries are spreading to the UK.

He said: “Most of the countries in the EU are suffering. Maybe in the UK it is not affecting people a lot yet but maybe it will get worse here.”
Nikos Kapitsinis, 28, from Greece, added: “People should be fighting against the policies of the EU. Not only in Greece, Portugal, Spain or Italy but also in this country because the crisis is here too.

“"Pointless protest. The EU is the problem and we need to get out of it."
Just because the EU is a problem, doesn't mean that it is *the* problem. The US isn't in the EU and it isn't doing so well either :-P. I think what this protest shows is that we what unites us across borders in Europe isn't a sham 'European Parliament'. What unites us is a hatred of the politicians, bankers, and bosses that run the show everywhere - in the EU and in this country.
Agree though that the protest was basically pointless without a guillotine of some sort... (maybe next time?)”

“Very poor journalism.. People aren't against austerity, but rather the way the Tories are targetting the poor in austerity "measures"”
