Rampant Bristol City record first home win
City turned on the style to register their first home win of the season and moved back into the top six of the Championship.
A three-goal burst inside 14 minutes at the start of the second half proved too much for Doncaster, who were simply overrun.
Michael McIndoe opened the scoring from the penalty spot, Nicky Maynard doubled the lead and Ivan Sproule added a third with a superb individual effort.
Richie Wellens pulled a goal back for Rovers, but McIndoe cracked in a fourth from 20 yards to confirm City's supremacy.
Determined to make amends following Tuesday's defeat to Birmingham, the Robins came out of the blocks quickly and twice threatened to take the lead during the opening exchanges.
Dele Adebola headed wide from Jamie McAllister's cross and Michael McIndoe shot just the wrong side of a post after being fed by Lee Johnson.
City should have taken the lead on 19 minutes, recalled winger Ivan Sproule skipping clear of the covering defence, only to steer his angled shot across the face of goal with only Neil Sullivan to beat.
Having repelled home pressure, Doncaster gradually gained a foothold in midfield and the pacy Lewis Guy outstripped Bradley Orr to unleash a rising drive, which flashed inches wide.
The visitors came closer still to breaking the deadlock 11 minutes before half-time, James Coppinger seizing upon McAllister's hesitancy to manufacture a sight of goal, but Chris Weale was quick to react, racing off his line to make a fine save.
City again breathed a sigh of relief when Guy chose to pass inside to James Hayter instead of shooting when well placed.
City responded in first-half injury time, Sproule again breaking clear, only for Sullivan to tip his rising shot behind for a corner.
Booked in the first half, Orr made way for Marvin Elliott at the interval and the substitue had a hand in the opening goal, pushing the ball through for Maynard to run on to.
City's record signing was upended by Sullivan, who was shown a yellow card and McIndoe beat the keeper from the penalty spot.
Maynard made no mistake moments later, running onto Sproule's return pass and sending an angled shot beyond Sullivan and into the far corner to afford the home side breathing space.
Sproule added a third on the hour, turning Gareth Roberts inside the penalty area and beating Sullivan with a low shot, which crept inside the far post.
Doncaster responded nine minutes later, Richie Wellens meeting Guy's cross with a first-time shot from 18 yards, which curled into the top corner.
But City had the final say, McIndoe drilling in a fourth from 20 yards.
