A PUB raided by police earlier this year is having its licence reviewed.

The Foresters Arms, on Westbury Hill, Westbury-on-Trym, was notorious for incidents of anti-social behaviour.

But, after a brief closure last month, it has reopened with a new manager, Dave Williams, who insists it has turned over a new leaf.

The licensees, Enterprise Inns, will appear before Bristol City Council's licensing sub-committee on Thursday.

The panel of three councillors can remove the licence, modify it with conditions or do nothing and see whether Mr Williams lives up to his pledge.

Enterprise regional manager Mike Pearce said the company was negotiating a number of proposed conditions with police.

He said they would be "non-contentious" – and would include measures such as the installation of CCTV.

Residents in Westbury have complained about the pub for years, believing it to be a magnet for trouble.

The pub was raided in June and three men were arrested – one on suspicion of possessing class A drugs.

Mr Williams told the Evening Post he was a self-employed "holding manager", running the pub until a permanent operator took over the lease.

He said the previous landlord had gone and things had dramatically improved since the Foresters reopened four weeks ago.

"There were drugs going on, under-age drinking and lots of noise," he said.

"That's all stopped because I won't allow it. I won't serve under-21s, drunks or hooligans. I won't have noise outside.

"I've taken out the pool table and the juke box.

"The licence review is a formality. Local police have looked at what we are doing and they are happy.

"We're going to open a steakhouse and we're going to get real ales in because this is what local people told us they want."

An Avon and Somerset Constabulary spokesman said police never commented on licensing hearings beforehand.

BLOB Enterprise Inns' pub the John Cabot, in Gloucester Road, which recently had strict conditions on its licence relaxed by the sub-committee, is currently closed with a To Let sign outside.

Mr Pearce said the sign would remain up until a possible new licensee was secured.

Meanwhile, the pub would reopen shortly following work to make it more comfortable for patrons, he said.
