A GIANT front door, a fence and a welcome mat appeared in Millennium Square to encourage Bristolians to have lunch with their neighbours.

Eco-chef Tom Hunt, who owns city restaurant Poco, and Bristol Lord Mayor councillor Peter Main launched The Big Lunch yesterday.

The event is a one-day get-together for neighbours – encouraging people across the UK to come together for a few hours of community, friendship and fun on June 2.

People are encouraged to take the first step to organise their own Big Lunch event by knocking on their neighbours' doors.

The fifth annual Big Lunch this year is funded by the Big Lottery Fund and run by the Eden Project.

The idea is to get as many people as possible across the UK to have lunch with their neighbours on one day and to get to know them better.

Around 8.5 million people took part in Big Lunches across the UK in June last year.
