With its exposed brick walls, huge Eastern European factory lights, polished stone floor and a bar fashioned out of vintage filing cabinets, The Office Bar and Canteen scores highly on the "cool"-ometer.

Located at the end of a row of shops that includes a launderette, a greengrocer and a charity shop, this former hairdressers has been transformed into a bar that wouldn't look out of place in trendy Shoreditch or Soho, but it might raise the eyebrows of a few Totterdown locals.

This Bohemian corner of south Bristol has been crying out for an upmarket and relaxed bar offering premium drinks and The Office certainly ticks those boxes.

When I arrived for an early evening drink, the flickering candles and low lighting gave the impression that the bar wasn't even open for business, but closer inspection revealed a few regulars at the bar.

On the shelves of the back bar (most of which has been made out of old scaffolding), there is an impressive selection of spirits, many of which end up in the short list of well-made cocktails.

The size and nature of this intimate bar means there is only one beer on draught – Vedett from Belgium – but there are plenty of more local options in the fridges, including bottles from Ashton's Bristol Beer Factory and Thatchers cider.

At the moment, The Office is only open Wednesday to Saturday, but there plans to extend these hours once the kitchen is opened and a full food menu is offered instead of the olives and marinated anchovy bar nibbles available at the moment.

The Office is fast becoming the local bar of choice for discerning Totterdown residents, but it is well worth the detour for a drink if you don't live in BS4.

Despite its location on busy Wells Road, it still feels like a hidden gem, but I have a feeling that when the kitchen opens, it's going to be very hard to get a table. I can't wait to go back and join the scrum.
