Promising athletes claim their awards
Former Olympian Nick Rose and Bristol & West AC's newest international Claire Hallissey were guests of honour at the club's awards evening for young athletes held at Rose Green Sports & Leisure Centre.
Awards were made to athletes in each age group and an award was also given to the newcomer who made the greatest impact in their first year of competition.
Among the Under-13 girls, Hannah Cockram was recognised for her performances at 800m and 1500m while the Under-13 boys' award went to Matthew Mattis, who is ranked third in long jump and eighth in the high jump in the South West.
"Matthew was also a bronze medallist in both events at the South West Inter Counties Championships," said team manager Hilary Nash.
Lucy Bryan was the club's outstanding performer in the Under-15 age group. Bryan, who is coached by former Commonwealth Games champion Neil Winter, won the England Athletics pole vault title with a championship best clearance of 3.48m and is ranked number one in the UK.
The Under-15 boys' award was shared by Jonathan Clayton and Geovaughn Burey.
Clayton has emerged as one of the best young throwers in the region, excelling at both the discus and hammer, while Burey claimed a sprint double at the South West Inter Counties Championships and reached the final of the 200m on his debut in the English Schools'.
"Geovaughn is a real high jump talent who has concentrated on his sprinting and the outcome has been improving performances and deserved success," said Nash.
Valentina Santo-Fullerton, who is ranked 10th in the South West over 300m and 13th over 200m, won the Under-17 women's prize.
The men's gong was presented to Luke Bailey, who won a superb bronze medal in the pole vault at the English Schools' Championships and is ranked joint seventh in the UK.
The newcomers' awards went to Jack Dyer (Under-13s) and Miranda Sadler (Under-15s).
"Jack is ranked sixth in the South West in the 100m and has been a regular team member throughout the season," said Nash. "Miranda arrived quietly and proved that her older sister (Olivia) is not the only talented member of the family."
