Chief Constable Port said: "We are honoured to have Her Royal Highness here with us today to officially open our state-of-the-art police station. The work which goes on day-in-day-out within this building is an example of modern policing in action.

"At The Bridewell, police officers and staff work together with probation, mental health, council workers, the prison service and criminal justice professionals under one roof, all supported by our private-sector partners South West One.

"As a result, we are able to be more effective at what we do and provide a better and more cost-effective service to the public. This is the future of policing in Britain."

Police say The Bridewell has increased their visibility and presence in the city centre and provides a far more "accessible and welcoming front office" to the public than the former station over the road.

Police authority chairman, Dr Peter Heffer, said: "I am delighted to see The Bridewell officially opened, it is clear to see from everyone here that this building has been built with the needs of the community and our partners firmly in mind.

"This new building highlights the police authority's commitment to making sure this police service has facilities fit for purpose now and in the foreseeable future. I am sure that both the public and police officers and staff will benefit from this new flagship police station."
