For visitors it's the great ship herself which is the main attraction, most are unaware of the vast archive of maritime maps, drawings and diagrams held on site at the Brunel Institution, which charts the UK's rich naval history.

The archive, which includes original drawings and designs by Isambard Kingdom Brunel, is under constant threat from potential insect infestations and the general ravages of time.

Vigilance is the key, according to the curator Eleni Papavasileiou, and she explains how they have to carefully asses and treat any new additions donated to the collection to ensure the archive is not cross contaminated. The hard work has been worth it and the unique collection is safe from any infestations.

“Artglad: for the last few years you can visit SGB on open Bristol days free of charge.

Surely this makes it accessable to all?”

“Kwacker needs to explain why he or she thinks that most people can afford to visit the S.S. Gt.Britain, rather than to dismiss comments as "rubbish".
Is it a blinkered view from someone that is lucky enough to be not struggling financially, and has no understanding of the real world?”

“Read FiltonInsider comment below and vote it up.

    This needs to be heard

What's happening to Concorde and the brabazon building is no different that letting the SGB rot in the falklands and building flats over the historic yard. Why isnt English heritage fighting for this??”

“I've been around the SS Great Britain and it's fantastic, as is the harbour.

Just a few miles up the road lies another fantastic attraction. It's been sitting there for over eight years doing nothing except rot. The whole story is on site, including a magnificent building where it was built, and the runway from which it took it's first flight in 1979. And also it's last flight in 2003, the last ever flight of this iconic aircraft type.

This aircraft represents, probably, the pinnacle of British Engineering. The whole story is right here in Bristol. Thousands turned up to watch that final flight, but since them almost every single one of them have turned their back on it.

Our councillors, and ourselves are allowing all of this to be trashed, in favour of housing and traffic congestion.

Soon, we won't even be able to train pilots in Bristol, as there will be no capacity left at Bristol. Business jets will go to Gloucestershire, probably taking their business with them. Airbus will stop manufacturing. Next year Airbus will move their remaining engineers into a new building, vactating the remaining BAE buildings. This in turn will allow BAE to demolish them and build yet more houses and traffic congestion. They may even demolish the Brabazon Hangar.

Bristol is being robbed so that BAE can make a fast buck.

We're being robbed of an asset that can easily match the fantastic SS Great Britain, and provide wealth to our region far excess of that mangnificent boat.”
