UNDER-FIRE Premiership referee Rob Styles was today at the centre of a new controversy involving Bristol City.

Appointed to take charge of last night's Coca-Cola Championship clash between the Robins and Sheffield United at Ashton Gate, the Hampshire official upset the home side and their supporters when turning down strong claims for a penalty midway through the second half.

Under challenge from City striker Stern John, Blades defender Ugo Ehiogu appeared to handle the ball inside the six-yard box.

But referee Styles waved away vehement claims for a spot-kick, much to the annoyance of City fans behind the goal in the Atyeo Stand.

John was in no doubt when he declared: "It was a definite handball. Ugo used his arm to block the ball and admitted as much to me afterwards on the pitch.

"But the linesman was unsighted and the referee wasn't in the best position to give it. It's frustrating, but these things happen in football and there's nothing we can do about it."

Styles was demoted to Championship duty after enraging Newcastle United boss Joe Kinnear and his players during a recent Premiership game against Manchester City at St James Park.

Television replays proved he was wrong to award a penalty to City and send off Magpies defender Habib Beye for a challenge on Brazilian striker Robinho in a game which eventually finished 2-2.

The Hampshire official was subsequently relegated to the role of fourth official during Sunday's Premier League showdown between Chelsea and Liverpool at Stamford Bridge.

"That could have been on his mind when the incident occured," said City manager Gary Johnson. "I never have a go at referees, but perhaps he needed to be 200 per cent sure it was a penalty. I was too far away (to see it), but Stern's an honest lad and he feels it should have been a penalty."

Lee Trundle missed a golden opportunity to seal victory five minutes into the second half, scuffing his close-range shot and allowing Blades keeper Paddy Kenny to make a brilliant save. Johnson added: "He knows he should have scored and he was distraught when he got back in the dressing room after the game. We have good strikers, but we need some of them to start scoring and that was a very good chance."

But the Bristol City boss was heartened by a fourth successive clean sheet and said: "If you can't score at one end, then it's important you stay solid at the other."

“I dont think we should blame the ref, weather it should of ben a pen or not, i think we should seriously worry about our own performance in midfield once again, awful display!! And to lee from bristol i think you summed up everything briliantly mate i really do......Why on earth was lee johnson not substituted, Gavin wiliams played him off the park and yet again as we see week in week out lee johnson is not taken off when he is by far our weekest player in midfield......And 3 free kicks on the edge of the box and the goalkeeper could of been sat in a deck chair........DO NOT LET LEE JOHNSON anywhere near the ball, he has had 2 seasons now at taken them and has not done anything form then, now lets see Lee trundle take them for 2 years and see the differance....but no it does no work like that he would only have to miss 1 and he would not be aloud to take another because his surname is not johnson??? And all you that say leave lee johnson alone he is our best player please please tell me what has he done in 2 years??? Tel me a game where his set pieces were brilliant?? Tell me a game where he didnt bottle out of challenges?? Tel me a game where he didnt constantly play the ball backwards or constantly give the ball away??? Tell me a game where he won a header and the ball went to one of our players???Because i cant think of any and i go to EVERY game home and away and have been a season ticket holder for a very long time Think back to the last 10 mins of the Norwich game when GJ pulled trundle back to feed Maynard some great balls where put through positive football! Not the negitive rubbish we see with Lee Johnson back there..................Still got faith in GJ but Gary You really do need to have a long hard look at your boy??”

“I'm a City fan but I certainly don't become hysterical just because a referee might not give what we biased fans think should be a penalty. City, like all teams, will not get some they ought to get and (as at Barnsley) get away with not conceding a penalty they should have conceded. It's always been thus and always will be unless we reach the ridiculous situation of stopping a game to review a video every time a dubious incident occurs.
It's amazing how fans, who have never refereed a game in their lives and for the most part don't know all the rules of the game or the interpretations refs have been instructed to make, become experts when it comes to criticising referees.
Criticise Trundle for missing a gaping open goal if you want to moan about someone. Although I've never done it I recognise that refereeing is much harder than playing and refs make far fewer mistakes in games than do players. Refs also have to face outrageous gamesmanship and downright cheating at times from players.”

“The ref wasn't the best for sure but it wasn't his fault Trundle missed from 2 yards and that GJ appears to be too pig-headed to substitute his son.

I thought Gavin Williams had a terrific second half, maybe even our best player, playing in the middle of midfield keeping the attacks going forward rather than checking out all the time as Johnson Jr does. He was one of the main reasons we created so many chances in the first part of the second half, Yet he's the one that makes way and Johnson Jr stays on.

It would be interesting to see how the team plays if Johnson Jr had an injury or was banned forcing GJ to give different players a chance in the middle (Williams/Noble).

One other thing that crossed my mind is are McIndoe/Williams/Johnson the best players we have for free kicks around the box. You can't tell me that Trundle doesn't have the technique to have had a couple of pops at goal last night a la Beattie.

In GJ we still trust but he seems to be making it hard for himself and the team......”

“Well by the looks of it its a case of " What goes around, comes around". From what i heard Barnsley should have had a clear cut penaltly against us,but never did,so can't argue the case!!”

“The penalty wasn't the only bad decision that he made during the game for both City and United and in my mind he isn't fit to ref any game including Sunday Football.”
