Police have stepped up their crackdown on anti-social behaviour in Henbury by putting up posters to name and shame offenders.

The large posters, which will be pinned up in and around Crow Lane, feature youths who are subject to an anti-social behaviour order (Asbo) or court injunction.

Officers want residents to report if they see the youths in the area. Teenagers face jail if they breach anti-social behaviour orders.

The posters feature teenagers Jamie Jeffrey, of Ascot Road, Southmead, and Ashley Mullen, of Roselarge Gardens, Brentry, who have been banned by a court injunction from Crow Lane and the surrounding area for a year.

The two 18-year-olds were targeted by police as ringleaders of gangs whose behaviour resulted in complaints of street fights, being drunk and disorderly, threatening residents using the shops in Crow Lane and vandalising property.

The posters also picture three other youths who have been served with Asbos after being threatening and abusive towards shop staff, youth club workers and police and for being part of a large group of youths that have been causing problems in Henbury and Brentry.

They are Truman Ward, 19, of Dovercourt Road, Horfield, Matthew Ryan, 16, of Henbury and George James, 17, of Brentry.

The Asbos imposed on the teenagers stops them from associating with each other, harassing people and entering certain parts of Henbury and Brentry. James is also banned from drinking alcohol within Henbury and Brentry.

New Henbury sergeant Terry Scoble says he wants residents to understand that police are taking the issue of anti-social behaviour seriously.

Sgt Scoble said: "We are going to put the posters anywhere we want to within the area the youths are banned from. The point of the posters and leaflets is to raise public awareness of the situation. We realise the posters will get ripped down but we have hundreds and we will just keep on putting them up.

"They will be put on lampposts, and perhaps in libraries and schools – anywhere where it is a public place. People need to report seeing these youths so we can go and deal with the breaches.

"Part of the reason for doing this exercise is to make the community in Henbury and the surrounding area realise that we are taking these issues seriously.

"There is a lot of work that goes into obtaining an Asbo – the weight of evidence is heavy and the decision is not taken lightly."

Safer Bristol Partnership service director Rick Palmer said: "Henbury has been making the headlines for all the wrong reasons for too long.

"Local people are understandably proud of their area but the actions of a mindless minority, many of whom are from outside the area, have been making their lives a misery through street drinking, rowdy and intimidating behaviour, vandalism and other anti-social acts.

"The situation couldn't continue and over the last few months a number of residents have said 'enough is enough'."

“Had I had my photograph published on a Police poster like this, my Parent's would've kicked my backside before marching me to the Police station. They certainly would not have tried defending me-bad spelling/grammar or not.
But then, I have responsible Parents who brought me up properly and who taught me right from wrong.”

“I am not sure their looks have anything to do with the fact these people are bullies who make peoples lives misery. They obvious feel useless and unable to contribute to society. They know they are failiures and they take it out on normal society. No, comments about their looks detracts from the more serious point. However they are a right bunch of minging pikies I suppose!!”

“I think as music composition groups go no one has bagged the names 'the ugly wasters' or 'brought up badly'? Just some constructive ideas. I am sure this troop of filth don't come up with too many of their own. Although perhaps their parents can bounce some ideas around on here through the medium of 'knocked-off laptop' from Bristols Chatsworth Estate.”

“I have lived in Henbury for two years. I don't really think Henbury is such a bad place although some schmuck kicked my wing mirror off my parked car a few weeks ago. With regards to the story I feel naming and shaming people is not going to do much in terms of rehabilitation for the offender and if the police were better at preventing crime and the legislature punished bad behaving people with custodial sentences society would generally improve and such incidence of anti social behaviour would decrease. To be frank shaming adolescent kids for being exactly that is a pitiful attempt at preventing crime and only creates alienation for the individual himself. If what these individuals have done is so bad why not lock them up? It wouldn't surprise me with all the fuss the Police and Evening Post have gone to shame these guys who's to say more people will be out there trying to gain the attention this paper and the police give them. Glamourising crime is not a constructive way to go about things and personally I think the police have infringed the boys human rights with their actions.”
