Bristol City could still face the threat of England striker Jermain Defoe when Portsmouth travel to Ashton Gate for their FA Cup third-round replay next week.

Despite Defoe's desire to leave Portsmouth, triggering death threats from fans and a reported £20 million bid from Juventus, Pompey boss Tony Adams still denies the forward has played his last game for the club.

Defoe called in sick ahead of Saturday's FA Cup tie at Fratton Park. And yesterday he told the Sunday Mirror he had received death threats from supporters which made him feel "sick to my stomach".

Adams has won only three of his first 15 matches in charge of Portsmouth since Harry Redknapp took the helm at Tottenham Hotspur and has seen Lassana Diarra and Sulley Muntari leave amidst rumours of financial concerns for Pompey owner Alexander Gaydamak.

But he is clinging on to hope of convincing Defoe to stay. He said: "Jermain is still a Portsmouth player and maybe I'll make a point of talking to him on Monday when he returns to training because people often change their minds, don't they?

"It happened here with Joe Jordan (former coach at Portsmouth) after Harry left. All the time Joe was going to stay. Then suddenly he went to Spurs, bless him.

"All I'm saying is I'm hopeful Jermain will be available for next week's game here against Manchester City and then we'll see about the replay at Bristol."
