Polling stations open across Bristol for elected mayor referendum
Polling stations have opened across Bristol this morning. Voters must decide if the city should be run by a directly elected mayor or keep the current system where an elected Councillor is in charge.
Officials report a slow but steady stream of people voting in the referendum for an elected mayor. However, at one polling station at Summerhill Junior school in St George just 8 people had voted by 9am.
Ten cities are holding similar referendums.
Polling stations close at 10pm tonight and the votes will be counted on Friday.

“@Totalsense1
Good point, we don't really need this at all, a nice change to one local election every 4 years would sort the problem. But that is not what we got mate.”

“How much is this nonsense costing today and how much is this new and unneccesary politician going to fleece is for. If the councillors were competent and capable would we need a mayor? Spend less not moreand do so more wisely! Fools!”

“@TheShire
NO. the council really can't chuck to much money at it because they wouldn't want to be seen as using tax payers money for there own campaign.
YES. They think we are going to have a mayor anyway and nobody is breaking party lines.
The above opinions are my own.”

“Vote 'Yes' to hand Bristol over to the rich or the established.
This is a deeply conservative proposal”

“@georges1974 I understand your comment regarding the council, but if it's as important as you say it is then why hasn't there been any campaigning for a Yes vote either?”

“I laughed out loud when I heard on the news this morning that Doncaster is holding a referendum today to decide whether to ABOLISH its elected mayoral post! It seems the change is not irreversible. Perhaps we can have ours on a 4-year trial as well?”

“@TheShire
Why should the status quo (council) send out information when it is there best interest that you vote no because you don't understand or not to bother voting at all.
at the end of the day this is a lot more important then Bristol winning the lottery?”

“I'd be surprised if anyone turns up, the only way I know there is a vote today is because I've got my polling card! Serious lack of any information either for or against in my area (Shirehampton) and there are similar complaints from other parts of the city. In fact, thinking about it I haven't heard of anyone who has actually seen any literature for or against.
As this position is tied to whether Bristol get a share of Government money, I feel it will be forced upon us anyway. Much in the same way the GBBN is being forced on us due to Government money, despite the majority of people calling for alternatives.”
