POLICE have been unable to identify a man who was taken to hospital after falling off his bike on the Portway this morning.

The cyclist, who is unconscious, came off his bike near Avonmouth Bridge at about 7.30am.

He was not carrying any identification when the accident happened and officers are keen to trace his relatives.

The man was riding a red Apollo CX10 mountain bike on the Bristol-bound side of the Portway when the accident happened. He has been described as white, in his late 40s to early 50s, about 6ft tall, of large build with a receding hairline.

He has a tattoo of a dagger through a white rose on his left forearm. He was wearing a high-visibility jacket, a blue Crane cycle jacket or jersey, black tracksuit bottoms and black trainers.

Police say he was carrying gloves, a hat, safety glasses and a loaf of bread. He visited a bakery in Shirehampton High Street shortly before the accident happened, police say.

A spokeswoman for Avon and Somerset police said the cyclist was "very poorly". Police have urged anyone recognising the description to call 101.

“What with this, and the incident on York Road on Tuesday, not a good couple of days for two-wheeled travellers. Or has the mystery Southmead woman driver struck again?

I hope both make a speedy and full recovery.”
