The body was discovered in Thomas Street at around 8.15am on Wednesday.
The photo shows him walking in the area around two hours previously.
His death is not being treated as suspicious.
He was carrying a black rucksack. He is described as a white man of average build and is thought to have been in his early 40's.
Detective Constable Alan Smith said: "This is a very sad incident. It appears this man may have fallen and suffered a head injury.
"I would appeal for anyone who thinks they know this man to get in touch with us. Have you noticed that your neighbour has not come home or are you worried about someone you have not heard from?"
Call police on 101 if you can help.

“The original story on this site stated that he was found on Dove Street North in Stokes Croft. It was subsequently corrected to read Dove Street South in Kingsdown.”
