Police make arrest on 1995 rape case
A Bristol man has been arrested on suspicion of committing a rape in the city 13 years ago.
Following a "cold case" review by detectives at Avon and Somerset police, new evidence about the horrific crime has come to light and a 29-year-old was yesterday taken in for questioning.
At around 6.15pm on Sunday, November 12, 1995, a woman was walking on a grassed area between Gatehouse Avenue and Cornleaze in Withywood, when she was attacked by a stranger.
Police are now keen to trace a group of youths that were in the area shortly after the incident.
The victim explained to them she had been attacked and her personal possessions scattered across the floor during the incident. The group helped her find the items and told her to report the attack to police.
Detective Chief Inspector Mike Carter said: "Following a review of this case vital evidence has come to light which has enabled us to arrest a 29-year-old man.
"However, we are still keen to talk to members of the group who helped the victim on the night of the incident.
"Despite an appeal at the time of this incident, we have been unable to trace this group. As time has gone on, these people will have got older and may now feel confident to come forward and we would urge them to do so.
"They could hold vital information that could help this investigation some 13 years on."
Police are still questioning the suspect in the 1995 case and would now like to speak to the group of young people who helped, or anyone who may remember the crime and think they may have been in the area at the time.
