Police have formally named an 11-year-old Bristol boy killed when a car mounted the pavement as he walked home from a church youth service.

Sam Riddall died after the car ploughed into him and his friends on Friday evening in Westbury-on-Trym.

The woman driver fled the scene and police today renewed their appeal to find her.

Sam was walking along Eastfield Road with three other children and an adult man at around 9.15pm after leaving a youth club service at the nearby Henleaze and Westbury Community Church.

Detectives said the white Ford Focus estate car was travelling along Eastfield Road towards the centre of the village when it careered off the road, mounted the pavement and hit the group.

Skid marks along the road and pavement show where the car screeched across the kerb towards a wall and then veering back onto the road.

Witnesses said that the car then hit other vehicles parked on the road.

The three other children were uninjured while the man received minor injuries and was released from hospital later that evening.

Floral tributes have been laid at the scene of the accident.

One bunch of flowers contained a card which read: "Dear Sammie, thank you for being one of the most friendliest and loveliest boys at Alberts Place.

"You were a fantastic footballer and will be greatly missed.

"God bless you now with love and prayers."

The card is signed from Chris from the Alberts Place church youth club, of which Sam was a member.

People who live opposite the scene yesterday said they were shocked.

One man, who did not want to be named, said: "It is absolutely horrific. "You can see the narrative of events by the skid marks, you can see the point at which the car hit the kerb and then it must have dragged along the pavement and crashed."

Police are still trying to find the woman driver who is white, with long blonde hair and in her mid-thirties.

Detective Inspector Ian Chadwick of Avon and Somerset Police has appealed to her to come forward.

"If you were the person involved in this collision please come forward so that we can talk to you about what happened," he said.

"If anyone else saw the collision or a woman leaving the area in a hurry, or knows where that person is now I would urge them to get in touch.

"This was a nasty collision which claimed the life of a young boy and I am keen to establish exactly what happened."

Anyone with information is asked to contact Avon and Somerset Constabulary on 0845 456 7000 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.
