Plymouth's Chris Dawson climbs rich list after £76m year
PLYMOUTH retail tycoon Chris Dawson has seen his wallet bulge by £76million in just a year – leaving him worth a whopping £380million.
The owner and founder of The Range store chain has therefore leapt 24 places to settle at number 230 in the Sunday Times Rich List, published tomorrow.

"The figures are stunning," said Mr Dawson. "I'm at 230 in the UK – there's 63million people live here."
But he insisted the success was also down to his 6,000 workers, many of whom he said are "home grown" into well-paid management positions.

"It's three cheers for the staff," he said.
Mr Dawson is now expecting to grow his The Range empire to 70 stores and create 2,500 jobs, this year.
And he is looking for a new Plymouth base for his HQ, having outgrown the Estover offices where 200 people work.
"We have just had an extension in there," he said.
"Part of the success is we are hanging off the ceiling at the moment
"But we are looking to build a flag-ship office block in Plymouth or go into an old one and do it up."
Mr Dawson added: "We are by far the most profitable company in the South West. Plymouth is in pole position."
And, indeed Mr Dawson is now rated as the fifth richest person in the South West, behind vacuum cleaner magnate Sir James Dyson, financial services pair Peter Hargreaves and Steve Lansdown, and meat mogul Lord Vestey.

“think for a bit on how he as got so rich, it's not by hard work i can tell you, he employs mostly youths at minimum wage, so what does that make him?

“God how mature.threaten to meet anyone that doesn't think this man is great and **** people off.wonder why your posts get removed? I have done well in my chosen career as a soldier, not a keyboard warrior like you.you are acting like a child so grow up and get to bed as threatening people might come back to bite you on the ass.”

“Death Penalty. Make it law for being so rich. Teach him a lesson for charging so much for a bag of manure at the Range. There is no other way.”

“cds/the range is no longer cheap, infact its quite expensive now - as for the staff they've always been known for their rude attitude, could never break into a smile, maybe a few of them do now but years ago they were down right rude - i'd like a bit of his money but not his life, and if i had to choose between my family and health or millions of pounds then family and health everytime, there are some things even money cant buy you!”

“Known him for many years - a paranoid con man never changes his spots - I have little money, but a great family worth a trillion £££££'s, no known enemies worth a billion £££££'s, a few real friend's not hangers on worth a zillion £££££'s, no guilt for the lives I have ruined worth a tillion £££££'s, health worth a killion £££££'s, I think I am far richer than Mr Dawson - I seem to have it all - I have also paid or are in the process of paying off my debts comfortably. I have never failed to pay anybody just because I can afford a top barrister, knowing they cannot, and just have to walk away because he wants more money and therefore he wants yours by any way or means. I wonder what the equation would look like if you deducted all monies that should have been paid to others ie wholesalers - business partners - promises - staff - workmen - builders, etc etc from the net profit, mmmmm. Any way I feel I am in the top flight of the got it all list - and the bottom of the most hated (not jealous) list.”

“This guy is paying rubbish wages that have to be made up to a living wage by tax payers via working tax credits. So, tax payers are funding his millionaire lifestyle. Nice guy.”
