Plenty of ideas in the pantry
Since it opened its doors last October, Lahloo Pantry has quickly established itself as one of the best places in Bristol to enjoy delicious handmade cakes.
This stylish, contemporary tea room is the first venture from Kate Gover, who runs the Lahloo tea company and the full range of her carefully selected artisan teas are available to drink in the café or takeaway.
Gover and her team of bakers produce a range of cakes and pastries every day, many of them seasonal.
Two of the best-sellers at the Lahloo Pantry are the carrot, orange and pistachio cake and the blood orange tarts.
Gover says the carrot, orange and pistachio cake was inspired by a recipe from acclaimed baker Dan Lepard.
"When we first read this recipe in Dan Lepard's Short and Sweet book, we just had to try it, but like everything at the Pantry we take inspiration from great bakers and add our very own twist.
"Our version is so easy to make and it is an amazingly light, softly spiced, moist carrot cake with a lovely chunky consistency. It has the perfect feel good factor, especially when served with a pot of our Jade Cloud or Bristol Brew tea."
The other big-sellers in at the Pantry this month are the blood orange tarts, which Kate says "fly out whenever we make them".
"We like to use seasonal fruit to add a little variety and blood oranges are in season right now. When the blood oranges have finished, we simply top with another seasonal fruit. In the summer it might be apricot or English strawberries.
"The best thing about these light and zesty tarts is that you can freeze the pre-made tart cases and simply defrost them and fill for an easy dessert. They are the perfect accompaniment to our Earl Grey tea."
