A PUBLIC meeting is being held in Horfield tomorrow night where residents can discuss the city council's plans to sell playing fields.

One of the sites earmarked is Wellington Hill playing fields.

The council says it is only used by dog walkers but the local people say it is well used by residents, a church playgroup and the popular Horfield Boys' Club.

Other sites the council is considering selling include Dovercourt Road open space and two sites in the south west corner of Muller Road recreational group, including the car park at the top of Downend Park Road.

The council has also suggested that houses could be built on part of Lockleaze open space.

Other proposals include the demolition of Ardagh Bowling Club Pavilion, which operates oversubscribed tennis courts used by children and adults throughout the year.

Earlier this month, picnics were held in threatened parks in north west Bristol including Horfield Common, the Daisy Field in Shirehampton, Okebourne Road open space in Henbury, and Lockleaze open space, off Romney Avenue.

Each was organised by Bristol North West MP Charlotte Leslie and local Conservative councillors to highlight the importance of the open spaces to local people and how much they mean to them.

Derek Marchant of West Broadway is urging local residents to attend the public meeting at the Ardagh Bowling Club tomorrow at 6.30pm.

He said: "During recent decades we have lost for ever lots of open space in the Horfield and Henleaze area.

"A public meeting is planned to discuss these proposals. I urge all to now attend this meeting although I fear that the cause, as usual, may already be lost with this 'don't care less' council intent on ruining amenities that have taken so long to build up and are now in danger of being lost for ever."
