A well-used play area in Portishead is to get a £30,000 makeover in time for the summer holidays.

Old and battered equipment at the play area at Avon Way is being replaced.

The work is being paid for with money given by developers as part of planning agreements with the district council.

The current swings and climbing frame have been in place for several years and have become rusty and unsafe.

New equipment, including four swings, a multi-climber frame and slide and roundabout will now be installed. Seating will also be put in, a new rubber impact surface installed and the area landscaped.

Access to the play area will also be improved and new litter bins will be provided.

This is the second programme of work that has been carried out at the play area. Eighteen months ago, a new multi-use games area (MUGA) was installed following a campaign for improved facilities by residents and councillors.

Portishead Councillor Alan McMurray, who has been involved in the scheme to revamp the area, said: "This is really good news for the people of Portishead.

"We sent out a questionnaire to local people asking them what sort of equipment they would like to see installed and had a really good response. I am delighted, that after many months of canvassing residents and close consultation with North Somerset Council, that this project is now coming to fruition."

The work to install the equipment is expected to take three weeks.
