Bristol Rovers manager Mark McGhee believes Charlton may eventually rue their decision to release young goalkeeper Conor Gough.

McGhee yesterday completed the signing of the 18-year-old on a two-year-deal following a short trial spell after he was released by the South London club.

Gough has yet to make a senior appearance, but spent time on loan at St Albans, Salisbury, Eastbourne and Chelmsford throughout the campaign and is set to provide competition for current Rovers number one Scott Bevan next season.

McGhee said: "Conor is a young lad with fantastic stature. He has been playing non-league and has experience at a decent level. He has played like a man and looks like a man even though he is only young.

"We have taken him from Charlton because they have some fantastic young keepers, who they rate very highly.

"Our job here is to benefit from people's mistakes – and I think Conor is someone who could prove in time that Charlton should have kept him."

Gough, meanwhile, revealed that former Pirate Harry Pell played a part in his decision to join the club.

"It's a wrench leaving Charlton because I had been there since I was 12, but I think change is good," said Gough.

"Perhaps I was getting a bit too comfortable there and now I need to get out of my comfort zone and prepare for a new challenge.

"My agent organised a trial for me with Rovers. I played an in-house game and the gaffer said I did well. It's developed from there.

"Harry told me that Bristol Rovers is a good club – and I'm excited about the future."

"I still have a great deal of work to do, but, hopefully, I'll be pushing Scott Bevan for a first-team place next season.

"I've already met and trained with Bev and goalkeeping coach Carl Emberson. They couldn't have made me feel more welcome."

Gough featured in a Rovers shirt for the first time in a reserve-team defeat at Yeovil yesterday. Ellis Harrison scored Rovers' consolation strike in the 2-1 reverse.

Rovers, meanwhile, have confirmed that they will play Coventry, who were recently relegated from the Championship, in a pre-season friendly on Saturday, August 4.

“I think I trust Nanny McGhee's judgment and I am sure this lad will acquit himself well. As with most other true gasheads I' really looking forward to the start of next season and the Gas replicating what Swindon have achieved this season (and NO! - I'm not going to lower my expectations as Buckle - sure there's a rhyme to that name - suggested we should)”
