First it was the gorillas, now it's ping pong tables. This summer 46 tables will be distributed throughout Bristol to encourage us all to enjoy a summer of sport.

The initiative, Ping! Bristol 2012, was launched today with the help of Wallace and Gromit and the Lord Mayor - showing that just about anyone can take up the sport.

The ping pong tables are launched on June 29 and will be available in parks across Bristol and in the city centre for a month. Play on the tables will be free and coaches on hand to help people improve their game.

“Great... but sadly I expect the negative whingers to be complaining here very soon.
Remember the Redcliffe Beach a few years ago? People said it would be full of drinkers and a magnet for anti-social behaviour... in fact there were no complaints at all, it was full of kids and families.
Remember the pianos in the park? People said they would all be smashed up in a matter of a couple of days... in fact hardly any were damaged.

With these sort of attitudes about it's hardly surprising anyone tries to do good stuff for the community.”
