BRISTOL dental practices are helping shape the way people's teeth are cared for in the future.

ADP practices in Avonmouth and Easton have signed up to a Department of Health pilot to help shape NHS services. It will also focus on how patients can take the lead in looking after their teeth.

Among the ways people will be able to take control of their dental hygiene is by dentists giving them a red, amber or green rating at a check-up and then advising patients how to look after their teeth on a long-term basis. The aim is to focus on preventing problems before they arise.

Barry Cockcroft, chief dental officer for England, said: "This is great news for all the practices involved as well as for patients who may be among the first in the country to trial the new ways of working. It's also great that staff in the practice can help lead the way for how dentistry will look in the future. "
