Athletics round-up: Phil Parry maintained his impressive record in the Oldbury-on-Severn 10-mile event by finishing second overall to claim the Avon title.

The Bristol & West AC veteran, who will be running the New York marathon next month, jetted in from a business trip in Canada for Sunday's event and showed few signs of jet-lag as he clocked a time of 55mins 15secs.

While that may have been slower than the 53:59 he ran to win the race 12 months ago, it was another impressive result on a course where Parry, pictured, has now claimed two wins and three second places in the last five years.

In an event won by Jim Cole, of Tavistock, Parry did well to hold off the challenge from the improving Tom Fewster, of Great Western Runners.

In the women's race, there was plenty of success for the Westbury Harriers' squad. Emma D'Alton led the way by finishing second overall but, like Parry, claimed the Avon title in a time of 63.02.

With club-mates Sophie Voller in fourth and Debbie Marsden in fifth, the Harriers comfortably won the team prize.

The men's team of John Terry (10th), Gregg Ward (19th), Chris Palmer (21st) and Rich Collinson (26th) appear to have won the team event, though it wasn't confirmed on the day.

The county over-50s and over-60s men's titles went to Jon Goodland and Terry Welch respectively.

In the women's age groups, Aileen Brown and Janet Brown were crowned over-40 and over-50 champions.

There were gold medals for Bristol & West AC's over-45 women's team at the British Masters Cross Country Relays at Mansfield.

The trio of Alison Hurford (17:23), Nicky Bromhall (17:53) and Sian Davies (16:38), the second fastest time overall, finished almost five minutes ahead of the field.

There was a strong turn-out from Clevedon AC at the Burnham-on-Sea half marathon and Richard Smith led the way home from the 283-strong field in 17th.

Simon Hancock, Neil Maston, Richard Ponsford and Andrew King also made the top 50, while Nailsea Running Club's John Mason finished 20th. In the women's race, Weston AC's Phillipa Stephens finished runner-up, over four minutes adrift of winner Ami Yetton, of Plymouth.

Mick O'Doherty, the Bristol & West AC veteran, ran away with the Marshfield Mudlark title. He finished over two minutes clear of Team Bath junior Alex Hill. Bitton Road Runners' Mark Searle also made the top 10, out of 154 finishers, while Bristol's Dave Gapper was ninth.

Alison Ramsey, of Hogweed Trotters, finished ninth overall (56mins 06secs) and second woman in the Blackland Downs Challenge 7.25 mile race.

Six members of Hogweed Trotters tackled the Loch Ness marathon.

Andy May led the way home in 3hrs 14mins 39secs, followed by Dave Wintle (3:20.02), Dom Hurford (3:54.09), Simon Hemmings (4:04.22), Jeff Farrish (4:07.21) and Steve Weeks (4:25.27).

Bristol & West junior Nathan Young won the Shepton Mallet 10k road race in 34mins 24secs.

Nailsea Running Club's Jeremy Furber finished 44th in the Isle of Wight marathon in 4hrs 2mins 34secs.

The Clevedon AC pair of Helen Ball and Dawn Barcham finished second and third respectively in the opening Burnham-on-Sea Winter 5k road race.
