The Bristol Post

I REALLY must write in answer to Patrick Francey (The Post February 8) issues.

I quite agree with all his comments, regarding Filton Airfield. Yes it was one of the strongest runways and twice as wide as Heathrow and as he suggested it has two major motorways and railway links, and it would have made commonsense to use this as a major airfield.

Planes could have departed from there and also it would have been very desirable for firms to move in who would have made the airfield very profitable flying out their goods abroad instead of blocking the roads with these enormous lorries.

I still hope there will be some reprieve at this late stage before the builders step in and also before it is destroyed by the diggers. As Mr Francey mentioned to build an airfield like Filton would cost millions. BAE Systems have really sold Filton down the river by aiming to sell this. Lots of Bristolians are very angry by what they have done by deciding to get rid of it.

Filton would have made a suitable place for any aircraft in trouble to land.

I only hope these two gentleman who have come forward who say they own the rights will finally put a stop to the destruction of this very important and historic airfield by the drillers before it is too late.

Also more houses cramped together will cause lots more congestion then there is now with Cribbs Causeway and traffic problems. I only hope in March people will go in numbers to vote very strongly against the closure of Filton before it is too late.

“Filton airfield has good transport links : both rail and motorway within 10 mins of the field : so the planners allowing this field to be ripped up will mean the south west will lose a national landmark as well as a business and leisure asset. Lets hope commonsense prevails and the planner have a re-think!! .S.”
