A pensioner has been killed in a hit-and-run in Bristol. The 78-year-old man was crossing Robertson Road, in Easton, when he was hit by a dark car.

Witnesses say the car stopped for a second or two before driving off.

The man, who was from the area, was taken to Frenchay Hospital where he later died. He had suffered serious head injuries.

Police are now hunting the driver of the dark blue or black Peugeot 307, or similar vehicle.

They have renewed an appeal for information, made after the incident on Wednesday evening.

Detective Inspector Gary Stephens said: "Just after 7.30pm or so on Wednesday evening, the gentleman was crossing the road. As he was crossing, a car came from Emlyn Road and hit him.

"The car paused for a short while, then drove off towards Stapleton Road, suggesting they knew they had hit someone.

"The man was taken to hospital with head injuries and he has since, tragically died."

Inspector Stephens said police had several statements from witnesses and would be reviewing CCTV. But he also urged more witnesses and crucially the driver and passenger, to come forward.

Speaking at the scene of the incident, he said: "It's a very busy area. There must have been other people coming through on foot, or in cars, or local residents, who saw what happened."

The incident is not the fatal first hit-and-run this autumn.

In August, Steve Beadle, 42, was hit by a car in Widcombe near Bath and died three weeks later in Frenchay Hospital. A 22-year-old. from Wiltshire, was later arrested in connection with the incident. And Michael Headley, 45, was knocked down by a white delivery van on the A432 Badminton Road at 1.45am on Friday, September 19. The driver did not stop after hitting Mr Headley.

Days later, 31-year-old Michael Ryder, from Tewkesbury, died after a hit-and-run on the M5 slip road between junctions eight and nine. Police later arrested a man.

Anyone with information about the Easton hit and run is asked to call Avon and Somerset police on 0845 456 7000 or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
