Traffic from Ashley Down and Horfield was diverted down Chesterfield Road, causing tailbacks for much of the morning.
The road, which is a busy commuter route from north-east Bristol to the M32 and central Bristol, was then reopened at about 1.40pm.
Police are appealing to anyone who witnessed the collision to call them on 101.

“This article has the age wrong of the victim, and people are more likely to survive impact at speeds under 30 mph, their chances increase substantially. Its a shame to think this driver was possibly exceeding even that in a 20mph zone but it cannot be helped but to wonder.
Both my husband and I wish the family our sincerest condolences, our thoughts will be with you over the coming days having just heard the news today on return from holiday.”

“It is very very sad to hear of a young life lost in this way.
But shame on Dr Jon Rogers, trying to make political capital out of this.”

“This is a real tragedy and this type of thing shouldn't be happening. where pedestrians and cars are likely to come into contact we need to ensure lower road speeds.”

“Living on Sussex Place I see the utter chaos that is the roundabout at the bottom of Ashley Hill every day. It's bloody ludicrous, I see near misses of pedestrians, cyclists and cars every week. People come zooming down the hill incredibly fast, and it's extremely hard to cross at the best of times.
I'd like to know what is being done to make this area safer, bearing in mind that there are several schools nearby and the area has a lot of footfall from pedestrians. It's inevitable that another accident like this happens, hopefully it wont be as terrible as this instance. Please fix it.”

“Very sad news for all involved.
@CllrJonRogers - "Deaths should not happen in 20mph areas."
I'm very surprised you are surprised. Afterall, your own report showed if you introduce 20mph zones in Bristol accident rates go up, but still pressed ahead?”
