Swindon Town's Lee Peacock insists he has learned more about midfield play after 15 minutes with Danny Wilson than in the rest of his career.

New Town boss Wilson signed Peacock as a striker for Bristol City in the summer of 2000, prior to the Scot scoring 62 goals in 162 games.

Peacock is now well-established as a central midfielder, having been switched there by Paul Sturrock in March 2007, shortly before Swindon clinched promotion from League Two.

But he admits he was simply 'put there' and only now – almost two years later – is he finally beginning to understand the position after talking to Wilson, who operated there during a lengthy top-flight career for Luton and Sheffield Wednesday.

Peacock said: "I had a meeting with him and I learned more in 15 minutes about playing midfield than I had done in the rest of my career. I have never been told how to do it before. I was just put there.

"He wants me to be more attacking in that role and get in the box more and try to get on the end of things.

"Before I have just been sitting and screening but he knows I can finish from my time up front and that's what he wants. He's played there himself all his career, so he knows how to do it."

When Peacock and Wilson arrived at City their sights were firmly set on promotion to what was then Division One.

Four years later, they came within one game of their dream, but lost the play-off final 1-0 to Brighton on a pivotal day at the Millennium Stadium.

Wilson was sacked and Peacock chose to leave on a Bosman free transfer to Sheffield Wednesday.

Swindon's current priority is to stay in League One, as Peacock admits.

"At Bristol City things were going relatively well. Things are a bit different now," said the former Manchester City man.

"But he knows where things are going wrong and we are moving in the right direction now.

"Already all the lads are saying what a good coach he is and I have spoken to a few lads at Hartlepool like Monky (Andy Monkhouse) and they are gutted that he is no longer in charge of them.

"He (Wilson) has already said he will bring new people in and no doubt he will do that. It should be easier for him to do that. It won't be easy but if players have worked with him before I think they will want to do so again.

"We have got a ridiculously large squad as it is and it is going to be unfortunate for some lads who will leave for whatever reason. But if you aren't playing football then you are wasting your time really."

Meanwhile, Swindon have re-arranged their League One game at Millwall for Tuesday, February 17 as the Lions have an FA Cup third round replay against Crewe Alexandra next week.

Swindon will also have to re-arrange their home game with Hartlepool on Saturday, January 24, as Pools have an FA Cup fourth round tie that afternoon.
