Villagers in Berrow are to stage a protest as part of their campaign to introduce safety measures along a busy road.

For the past eight years, residents have been waiting for Somerset County Council to carry out improvements to Coast Road.

The road has virtually no pavements or verges and many people claim it poses a danger to pedestrians trying to use it.

Many villagers say it is only a matter of time before someone is killed or seriously injured on a road.

Last summer a walk along the road was held to highlight the desperate need for a pavement.

The walk caused widespread disruption to holidaymakers when long queues of traffic built up across the area.

Now Berrow's Local Action Team (LAT) is planning another one-hour protest march on Coast Road on May 2, starting at 11am in the church car park.

The aim is to urge Somerset County Council to change its mind after it said in December there was little possibility of the footway being completed in the foreseeable future.

LAT chairman Ken May said: "The issue of Coast Road has dragged on for years, with a wholly inappropriate and totally unacceptable response from the county council.

"We are going to change that.

"This is the first of many and increasingly more frequent and longer protests being planned throughout the holiday season.

"We are going to cause as much disruption to traffic flows as possible so that our case will be addressed and resolved.

"The residents are absolutely exasperated at the complacency and ineptitude displayed.

"It's OK for Somerset to address urban issues but there's been no mention of rural ones."

"Large amounts of money have even recently been squandered installing dropped kerbs and tactile paving in Berrow – it's really galling that money has been spent on another scheme."

Sedgemoor Tourism Association is also supporting the campaign to get the county council to rethink its decision.
